Tiny Minnesota Town is Now the Gnome Capital of the U.S.
In western Minnesota, there's a quaint and quirky town where, as you wander its streets, you'll quickly notice something delightfully unique about it.
It's the tiny town of Dawson, MN located about 150 miles west of the Twin Cities near the border of South Dakota. Every year, during the much-anticipated Riverfest, the town unveils a new surprise that adds to its whimsical charm.
Welcome to Dawson, MN, Also Known as Gnometown USA!
Dawson has a population of about 1,500 people... plus a plethora of pint-sized guardians, each one with its own unique personality and story.
Yes, Dawson is famous for its one-of-a-kind gnome statues that adorn the city, each representing a local hero who has given back to the community in some way.
It all started in the 80s when city leaders were looking for something unique that would identify the town. As the story goes, the local librarian at the time had been recently reading about gnomes and chimed in with, "I think we should be Gnometown!"
It seems that idea was well-received as the City of Dawson has been adding new gnomes to its collection since 1989. As of June 2024, there are 46 of the enchanting 3-foot tall statues located at the aptly named Gnome Park and the Dawson Public Library.
New gnomes are added to the park and the original carved wood gnomes live inside the library protected from the elements.
What Do the Gnomes in Dawson, MN Represent?
The Gnome Capital of the U.S. gets a little 'gnomier' each year as citizens come together to honor their latest community champion by unveiling a new gnome statue.
Each gnome has its own charm and backstory, immortalizing the spirit of the community member it represents.
From the gnome that embodies the local music teacher who ensured every child had the opportunity to experience the magic of music, to the gnome that pays homage to the revered local WWII surgeon who made sure the town's medical needs were met, each statue tells a tale of kindness, bravery, and community spirit.
