I've considered myself pretty lucky to live where I do in Rochester. The neighborhood to which I reside is pretty quiet year round and there's not a lot I can gripe about considering most of my neighbors are older and keep to themselves. But last weekend I overheard a small argument between two neighbors over noise and some yard work that got me thinking: When is the best time to start those chores?

While I understand that respecting your neighbors is something you should always attempt to do, we've also had a really strange summer with a mix of very hot and unseasonably cool temperatures such as this past week. So while it certainly makes sense to do all your chores in the morning before it gets too hot, a lot of people also prefer to do their chores later at night which is what happened in my neck of the woods.

I went and posted the question on Facebook, asking everyone when the appropriate time to begin yard work would be, and here are a few answers:

So as you can see, a lot of you would prefer nothing super early which is something I totally agree on. It's bad enough my kid wakes me up at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday, I don't need your lawn mower to do the same.

Personally when I am working on my lawn, I normally wait until after 10 a.m. or whenever the grass is dry enough to mow. If I'm just working out in the garage or something to that nature, I'll get to work sooner than that but I'll make sure the radio isn't blaring music too loud.

I think if you let your neighbor know in advance what time you like to get your chores done, I would think they would comply with your request/needs to start earlier in the day or if you're going to be noisy later into the evening. The key is to not be rude about it.

So what do you think is an appropriate and respectable time to begin your outdoor chores?
