If you were planning a winter weekend getaway to the Twin Cities to splash around at the Water Park of America, you'd better do it quickly!

The water park and its attached Radisson Hotel will close at the end of January. But fear not, water park lovers. It's closing for a very exciting reason.

It turns out, according to a recent story in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, that Great Wolf Resorts, one of the nation's largest water park operators, has purchased the property and plans to expand and rebrand the facility, renaming it the Great Wolf Lodge. Included in the expansion is rumored to be retail shops, a ropes course, a climbing wall and even a bowling alley.

The renovations are expected to be complete by sometime in November. So, while it will mean one less place to take the kids in the short-term, the long-range plan sounds like it will provide major improvements that will keep kids happy, and wet, for a long time to come!

Great Wolf Resorts owns 15 properties across the country, including one at the Wisconsin Dells, but this will be their first park based in Minnesota.

Now, if only they would come in and build a water park right here in Rochester, right?
