Arden Hills, MN (KROC AM News) - A funeral was held Thursday for the first state correction officer to be killed in the line of duty in Minnesota.

The service for Joseph Gomm was held in Arden Hills. Several thousand officers served as escorts for the procession from the church to Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville where Gomm was laid to rest. Also, several hundred people lined along the 9-mile stretch of the procession to honor the officer.

Gomm was killed by an inmate in the Stillwater Prison last week.

Gov. Dayton has ordered flags to fly at half-staff Thursday in honor of Gomm.

The Governor released this statement:

“Officer Gomm, forty-five years of age, dedicated sixteen years of exemplary service to the Minnesota Department of Corrections. From Blaine, Gomm enjoyed cooking, playing video games, and had a love for animals.”
