Detroit Lakes, MN (KROC-AM News) - A former Northwestern Minnesota Police Chief was found dead from a gunshot wound over the weekend. A news release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office says it appears 53-year-old Jay Nelson died as a result of a hunting-related accident but also notes the case is still under investigation.

His body was discovered Saturday evening inside a vehicle on a logging trail near Little Flat Lake, which is about 15 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes. Investigators are asking for the public's assistance in hopes of locating someone who may have been in that area or heard gunshots on Saturday.

Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander says Nelson had a long career in law enforcement that started in the mid-1980’s when he was hired as a part-time deputy with the Sheriff's Department and ended when he retired from the job of Police Chief in Lake Park in 2015.
