Kenyon, MN (KROC-AM News) - There was a happy ending to a search for an elderly man with dementia who left an assisted living center in Kenyon late Saturday night.

The police department in the Goodhue County Community was alerted around 12:30 a.m. that 80-year-old Charles Armstrong had departed the facility on foot and could be headed to his former home. According to a statement on the Kenyon Police Department Facebook page, an extensive search was immediately launched, but despite the efforts of the Kenyon Police and Fire Departments, and the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Department, Mr. Armstrong was still missing when the search was scaled back around 5 a.m. while authorities waited for daylight.

The effort to find Armstrong was given a boost around 6:30 a.m., when officials were informed he had contacted a family member on his cellphone, but he was confused about his location. Over 100 volunteers joined the search Sunday morning and Armstrong was eventually located, shortly after 3 p.m. near a park along the Zumbro River in Kenyon.

After he was reunited with his family, officials say he was transported to a local health care facility for an evaluation.
