Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Work is expected to begin soon on the latest project at the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial. Actually, work will resume.

The committee that oversees the memorial began work earlier on building a sidewalk that would connect the site to a nearby storage building. The committee said the new connection would make it easier to move chairs and equipment from the building to the memorial for events.

But the work was stopped by Park Department staff, which had concerns about the negative aesthetic impact it might have on the memorial.

The issue went before the Park Board last month and it directed the two sides to work out an agreement. No agreement was reached and the issue was back before the Park Board on Tuesday.

Staff encouraged the board to approve its plan, which calls for an indirect connection to the building. But after hearing from the memorial committee, the board sided with its proposal for a direct connection.

Like the rest of the site, the new sidewalk will consist of memorial pavers. The committee has already sold 252 pavers for the path and has room for 84 more.
