The city of Minneapolis is officially increasing its minimum wage to $15 per hour for everyone who works inside the city. The city council voted 11-1 in favor of the increase. Blong Yang, the only member who voted “no,” argues that the new minimum wage increase will cause businesses to leave the city.

For the record, this wage increase doesn’t apply to tip workers, like servers and bartenders. It also isn’t going into effect immediately, as businesses with 100 or more employees have 5 years to implement the wage increase, while smaller businesses will have up to 7 years.

Prior to today, the current minimum wage in Minneapolis has ranged from $7.75 to $9.50 an hour, so this is definitely a big jump for workers in the city.

But here’s what I want to know – should this change also come to the Med City? I’m sure the idea of Rochester having a $15 minimum wage increase will have many in favor and many opposed, so let’s put it to a vote in our poll below. And if you have more to say, feel free to share your opinion on our Facebook page!
