Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Rochester high school was briefly placed in a precautionary lockdown Wednesday after a student indicated he had a gun in his backpack.

Police Captain John Sherwin says the incident happened around 10 a.m. at John Marshall.

He says a 16-year-old male student told his teacher he wanted to go talk to the principal. Sherwin says the student said he had a gun and made a comment about “doing something stupid.” He left and after school administrators were informed, the lockdown order was issued.

The school’s liaison police officer found the student in the attendance office. The student appeared agitated but eventually settled down and was taken into police custody.

Sherwin says the student did not have a gun. He says the lockdown lasted about 10 - 15 minutes.
