McDaniel was arrested in September after he jumped into a Rochester police squad car and sped away after a patrol officer stopped to investigate why a vehicle had stopped in the middle of 16th Street Southeast. While the officer was speaking to the driver, McDaniel jumped out of the passenger seat, got into the driver’s seat of the law enforcement vehicle, and drove away.

Police used the stolen squad car’s GPS location system to track it to the neighborhood adjacent to Slatterly Park, where the vehicle had been abandoned with damage to its front tires and rims. McDaniel was then tracked by a K-9 officer, who delivered a few bites to the man to subdue him and allow the pursuing officers to take him into custody.

When the incident occurred, a police spokesman indicated it was the first time in recent memory of any Rochester Police Car had been stolen.

A sentencing date has not been set for McDaniel, who has an extensive criminal history that includes an attempt to break out of the Olmsted County jail by busting out a window several years ago. Court records show his escape attempt was thwarted because of the small size of the window in his jail cell.
