Austin, MN (KROC AM News) - A Mower County man is accused of causing horrific injuries to a baby, leaving the infant in intensive care.

Arraigned Wednesday on a 1st-degree assault charge was 23-year-old Nathaniel Ambrose of Lyle.

According to the criminal complaint in the case, Ambrose was watching his girlfriend’s 8-week-old son while she was at work Aug. 25th. She returned home and saw blood coming from his mouth. She decided to drive to Rochester to talk to a family member about the baby. But she became concerned with his appearance and instead went to Olmsted Medical Center.

When it was determined the baby had suffered serious injuries, it was decided to transport him by ambulance to St. Marys Hospital where doctors admitted him to the pediatric ICU.

Doctors found the baby had suffered multiple injuries, including “facial bruising, bruising on his scrotum, rectal tearing and a possible brain bleed.”

After the doctors determined the injuries were caused by “physical abuse” police were notified and the investigation began.

The child’s mother said her baby appeared to be fine when she went to work that morning. Ambrose denied injuring the child and gave various explanations about what may have happened.

His bail was set at $125,000 at his arraignment and he was ordered back to court Sept. 10th for another hearing.
