Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  Temperatures soared into the low 70s in the Rochester area Tuesday and put smiles on high school coaches and athletes.

For many, it was the first time this spring they were able to play games outdoors.

Rochester Mayo High School athletics director Jeff Whitney says the Spartans softball team was one of those playing its first outdoor game.

While watching the game, Whitney tweeted it was “ the latest start outdoors in my 27 years at Mayo HS.  Job satisfaction is looking up this week!”

Whitney says he is hopeful the earlier missed games will be made up, many as part of a doubleheader. But he says Mother Nature will continue to play a major role.

“It won’t be easy to find makeup dates if we don’t have above average weather the rest of the way out.”
