Yesterday Facebook announced a brand new version of its Messenger chat app that's specifically designed for young children.

Messenger Kids, for kids between six and twelve, does not require a Facebook account. (Facebook actually prohibits anyone under 13 from having an account.)

The Messenger Kids app is an add on to a parent's account. It allows the parents to manage the app and control which friends and family member the child can chat with. After downloading the new app, parents can set a contact list and give their child access to chat.

Facebook explained more in this blog post: “There are no ads in Messenger Kids and your child's information isn't used for ads. It is free to download and there are no in-app purchases.”
