Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester woman has been sentenced to four years on probation for her conviction on charges stemming from a traffic crash that occurred earlier this year while she was driving drunk with a young child in her vehicle. 35-year-old Lawanda Hicks plead guilty last month to gross misdemeanor counts of criminal vehicular operation and DUI. Three other charges, including driving after revocation, were dismissed through the plea agreement.

She was arrested after her minivan collided with another minivan at the intersection of North Broadway and 7th Street in the early morning hours of June 28th. The police report says the collision occurred during a thunderstorm when Hicks drove through a red light. No one was seriously injured in the crash even though she did not have her four-year-old child secured in a safety seat.

Court records show Hicks’ driver’s license was revoked in March when she was sentenced for another DUI-related conviction.

Besides the probationary sentence, Hicks was also ordered to spend 30 days on electronic home detention, perform 90 hours of community work service and complete chemical dependency treatment.
