The Times Square 'Ball Drop' is a popular destination for many in the U.S., and not just those who go there, even people in their living rooms tune in to watch that .. ball... drop.

There are other objects, things, and even animals that are either dropped, or raised, or belong to celebrations all over, and some of them are really wild, crazy and... well... to put it mildly, weird.  There are hundreds of objects and things that help people ring in the new year from a giant beer bottle, to candy, to animals.

  • Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin uses a carp... caught by local fishermen, which is nicknamed 'Lucky', weighs between 25 - 30 pounds, and then is buried with a commemorative plaque with the carp's name and year.  This video is from last year.  I would assume not much is different this year.

I am quite positive that there are many many many more really odd, bizarre and insane items that are used in various locations, but those are a few of the crazy traditions that some people have.  The Mall of America is having a circus theme this year, where patrons can munch on cotton candy and peanuts and a ring master will initiate the ball drop.  It will run ya about $31.
