‘Scarface’ Reboot Gains Coen Brothers as Script Doctors, Peter Berg and David Mackenzie on Director Shortlist
There is a whole lot going on with Universal’s Scarface reboot. Today brought a few big announcements: first off, Joel and Ethan Coen, who are script doctors in their own right, have been tapped to rework the screenplay. The two have previously polished the scripts of Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. But we’re not done yet. While Antoine Fuqua exited the project to focus on the Equalizer sequel, the film is close to landing a new director, and Peter Berg and Hell or High Water’s David Mackenzie are frontrunners.
John Carpenter Casually Announces a New ‘Halloween’ in 2018, Time to Freak Out
No, this is not a drill. Paramount shelving the new Friday the 13th so soon before production was supposed to begin came as a somewhat sudden disappointment, but, to paraphrase Julie Andrews, when Hollywood closes a door, somewhere they open a window. As it turns out, that window is a Halloween reboot, which already has a director, a screenwriter, a studio, a release date, and, quite possibly, a score from the horror master himself, John Carpenter.
M. Night Shyamalan Already Has an Outline Ready for His Next Movie
Split marked quite a comeback for a director whose name has lately been synonymous with huge disappointments. But by contrast, Split is a slick, thrilling superhero movie, and one of Shyamalan’s best in years. It’s still making waves at the box office and, riding off its success, the director already has a sequel planned that’s actually more like the third in a trilogy. If you haven’s seen Split yet, be aware that there are pretty major SPOILERS for the end of the movie from here on out.
Watch the Recently Unearthed, Completely Improvised Audition Tapes for ‘Paranormal Activity’
Found-footage horror has always been pretty hit-or-miss: for every Blair Witch Project there’s a Last Exorcism. Most of the time, it’s the low-budget efforts that succeed in utilizing the style’s greatest strengths, so it’s not surprising that Paranormal Activity, made on a budget of $15,000, became a global phenomenon. The sequels are what they are, but the first movie is still chilling to this day, in part because of its two leads, who act in such a way that it’s easy to believe it’s all real.
‘Kong: Skull Island’ Is Not Even Playing Anymore With Those ‘Apocalypse Now’ Comparisons
There are movie posters, and then there are movie posters. Of late, most action movie posters kinda all look the same, with some notable exceptions. Those movies willing to get a little more creative with their promotional art really stand out amongst the crowds of character heads photoshopped on top of one another. Kong: Skull Island entered the game today with a new poster that’s a direct homage to one of the most famous war movies of all time: Apocalypse Now.
Watch the First Three Minutes of ‘Rings’ Right Now, We Dare You
The Ring sequel no one was asking for is about to hit theaters, and if watching a movie about people dying because they watched a movie appeals to you, you probably want to check out the full first scene Paramount released today. It features a doomed plane, some doomed people, and a girl crawling out of a — well, you know the rest.
James Cameron Disagrees with ‘Mythbusters,’ Defends the ‘Titanic’ Ending
It’s a debate as old as time. Or at least as old as James Cameron’s Titanic, which came out in 1997, so not that old, but still. “They both could have fit on that door!” is the rallying cry of Titanic truthers, who believe that the door (which isn’t actually a door (it’s ajar! just kidding)) that Rose (Kate Winslet) floats on while Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) freezes to death in the subzero waters of the North Atlantic was big enough to hold both of them. Mythbusters even dedicated an episode to it. But Cameron himself is still holding fast to the movie’s original ending, much like Jack’s hands after they froze.
You Can Preview the Epic ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ Soundtrack Right Now
A soundtrack is one of the things that can make of break a movie, and recently action movies have seen a rise in some really creative scores. For every bit of one-note (no pun intended) superhero movie music that’s designed to be utterly unmemorable, we also have stuff like the Mad Mad: Fury Road soundtrack, which is one of the greatest, most exciting sets of music from the last decade. Today, two tracks from the upcoming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter have been released in a small preview, and it sounds pretty epic.
Josh Gad Tried to Ask Daisy Ridley About ‘The Last Jedi,’ and She Was Not Having It
With this week’s title reveal, Star Wars fever is back, and tons of people are weighing in on who they think “the last jedi” is. Or are. Even some of the stars who aren’t in the movie want to know the answer, and Josh Gad took it upon himself to try to find out from Daisy Ridley herself what that mysterious title means. Spoiler alert: he didn’t get an answer.
‘Aquaman’ Gang Gets Together for a Table Read Group Photo
Things are heating up for the Justice League lately. We’ve got two new photos of the team in action (which mainly involves just standing around in costume), and now the Aquaman gang has gotten together for their first reading of the script. Director James Wan posted a photo on his Twitter account of him palling around with Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, and the hero himself, Jason Momoa.
