Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson is winding down his career as an officer and Friday is a day he would rather forget - he had to recommend the firing of another cop.

Peterson’s recommendation to terminate Officer Jeffery Stobbs was accepted by the city’s Police Civil Service Commission.

Peterson’s recommendation was based on an evaluation that found Stobbs was unfit for duty. Stobbs has faced several complaints of excessive force and Peterson says in most of the incidents he was dealt with through reprimand, suspension or other administrative measures. The most recent one was reported earlier this year and led to the eventual termination recommendation.

Peterson says he can only recall one officer misconduct case in his 20-year career as chief that had the same result as Friday’s meeting.

In that case, the commission voted to fire an officer but he appealed and an arbitrator ruled in his favor and he was reinstated. Peterson says in most of the other cases, the officer either resigned or retired. In some of those cases, the officer was eligible for disability benefits.

Stobbs has 30 days to appeal the firing. He was hired by the RPD in 2008

If the case ends up before an arbitrator, it’s possible the decision would come after Peterson’s retirement in April.
